‘Birth of an Airline’

This painting of a De Havilland DH4a aircraft depicts the very first commercial flight on 25 August 1919 by the newly created Aircraft Transport and Travel Limited. The aircraft is passing over the ‘White Cliffs’ en route from London to Paris. Its commercial load was only one passenger, a reporter from the Evening Standard, and his dog. The flight also carried a heap of Evening Standard newspapers, a box of Devonshire cream and some grouse. In this exotic fashion began the history of an aircraft company which eventually became British Airways.
